Star Wars: The Clone Wars

The Complete Guide to the Animated Saga

Overview

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a 3D CGI animated television series created by George Lucas and produced by Lucasfilm Animation. The show began on Cartoon Network and later concluded on Disney+, spanning seven seasons from 2008 to 2020.

7 Seasons
133 Episodes
12 Years (2008-2020)

What the Show Is

The series is set between Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005), following Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin's Padawan Ahsoka Tano during the Clone Wars. It was developed so Lucas could tell "in-between" stories from the prequel era at TV length, with Dave Filoni brought in as supervising director and a key creative partner.

Animation is all about design, it's all about style.

— George Lucas

Broadcast History

Cartoon Network Run (2008–2013)

The project launched with an animated theatrical film (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) released in August 2008, which was assembled from early story material intended for the series. The TV series then officially premiered on Cartoon Network on October 3, 2008, and ran there for five seasons. Lucasfilm announced in March 2013 that the show would end with Season 5, with some already-farther-along episode arcs slated to be released later in other ways.

From TV to Streaming (Netflix Bridge)

After the initial cancellation, unfinished arcs were continued under the "Clone Wars Legacy" umbrella (for example, via comics/other formats rather than finished episodes). The series returned as Season 6, subtitled The Lost Missions, released on Netflix in March 2014. As Disney moved toward making Disney+ its central streaming home, Star Wars content that had been on Netflix was scheduled to leave by April 2019, positioning Disney+ as the primary platform going forward.

Disney+ Finale (2020)

Disney+ revived the show again for a seventh and final season, with 12 new episodes beginning February 21, 2020. The final season ran on Disney+ through May 4, 2020, and it concluded with the "Siege of Mandalore" storyline set alongside events in Revenge of the Sith. StarWars.com explicitly framed the Disney+ season as the "thrilling conclusion" of the series, crediting Lucas as creator and Filoni as executive producer/supervising director.

Production & Technology

Why Computer Animation?

George Lucas chose 3D computer animation for The Clone Wars because he wanted to create a more ambitious, cinematic series that could match the visual scope and lighting quality of the live-action films. After testing 2D animation with Genndy Tartakovsky's 2003 Clone Wars micro-series, Lucas envisioned a 30-minute show using advanced CG techniques to "fill in the blanks of the Star Wars universe" on a larger canvas.

Technical and Creative Advantages

Lucas treated the animated series like a live-action production, using CGI to achieve realistic lighting and environments similar to the prequel films. Director Dave Filoni noted that the hardest challenge was getting the lighting sensibility from the features, explaining that "if live action can push things this far, then animation has to as well". The CGI approach allowed them to create photorealistic sets, vehicles, and environments from the movies while maintaining anime-influenced character designs.

If live action can push things this far, then animation has to as well.

— Dave Filoni, Supervising Director

Production Philosophy

Lucas approached the project with his signature philosophy about raising the bar technologically. The combination of realistic CG environments with stylized character design created what Lucas considered "a CG milestone for TV," reflecting his belief that "animation is all about design, it's all about style" rather than pure photorealism. Each episode originally cost close to $1 million, a price tag far higher than other animated series at the time, because Lucas wanted to push the boundaries of what TV animation could achieve.

The Creators

George Lucas - Creator

George Lucas had extensive creative control over the stories in The Clone Wars, serving far more than just an executive producer title. Initially, Lucas planned to be hands-off and meet with the creative team only once or twice a year, but when he saw they were "creating cinema," he became deeply involved and began meeting with Dave Filoni and the writers weekly.

In the early stages, Lucas and Filoni generated the initial story ideas together, developing them into premises that Lucas would review and approve before scripts were written. As the series progressed, Lucas increasingly wrote his own story outlines that the writers then crafted into full scripts. Series writer Henry Gilroy explained that "George is the Alpha and the Omega, and is involved in the story from beginning to end" and that "just about every story now comes from 'The Maker' himself."

Lucas would throw complete story ideas into the writers' room and expect them to be executed regardless of complexity. He frequently overrode creative decisions when he felt they weren't working, personally working with Filoni and the editing team to remake episodes when necessary.

Dave Filoni - Supervising Director

Dave Filoni was the supervising director and executive producer of The Clone Wars, serving as George Lucas's creative partner and protégé throughout the series. Lucas personally selected Filoni in 2005 to develop the series together, with Filoni working as his apprentice in what became a nearly decade-long mentorship relationship.

As supervising director, Filoni oversaw all aspects of production from story development through final sound mix. He directed numerous episodes himself and supervised the work of other directors on the series. Beyond directing, Filoni also wrote scripts for many episodes, including key final season episodes like "The Phantom Apprentice" and "Old Friends Not Forgotten."

Filoni worked closely with Lucas on developing story ideas in the early stages of the series. While Lucas increasingly provided story outlines that Filoni and the writers would script, Filoni served as the creative interpreter who translated Lucas's vision into finished episodes. His work on The Clone Wars established him as Lucas's creative successor and eventually led to his position as Chief Creative Officer and President of Lucasfilm.
